city stars
By DSA Alumnus Maggie Fogle
spilled dreams shine silver on crushed velvet curtains
billions of diamonds forged into a pale streak
the window shines ruby
stained with the blood of the dying sun
the evening wind whispers
to the city’s twilight skyline
tinkling a newborn’s mobile
an infant’s first night time sky
is a web of moonlight wishes stretched into chains
too fragile to hold the promise
of the morning’s sapphire dew
firefly streetlights take the place of heaven’s light,
a glittering ocean of sidewalk halos
that hover without angels to crown
who has the will to grow emerald wings
and fly up into air that is too thin for song
this is what will crown the baby’s brow
when he ascends to become a star
at the first light of dawn
